Altitude Sickness, Explained Without the Panic

Dr. Sunita GurungExpedition Medical Advisor04 February 20269 min read

What acclimatisation actually does to your body, and the simple rules that keep our clients walking.

Above 2,500 m your body begins a genuine physiological adaptation. Handled patiently, it is safe for the overwhelming majority of travellers.

The rules are boring and they work: climb high, sleep low, never gain more than 500 m of sleeping altitude per day above 3,000 m, and take a rest day every 1,000 m.

Descent is the only cure that always works. Every Nepal Heaven itinerary is built with descent options and a satellite communicator on every trek.
